The Healthcare Quality group of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) presented the ongoing work of the European Commission Initiative for Breast Cancer (ECIBC) at the 14th European Breast Cancer conference (EBCC14) in Milan, Italy.
The main focus was on:
- the upcoming quality assurance scheme which has been tested in real-settings and will be available soon for implementation, as well as
- the updated guideline recommendations for breast cancer screening.
The group had invaluable discussions with patient representatives on their needs and concerns, namely on detecting lobular cancer and screening for dense breasts which are subject to the upcoming ECIBC recommendations. Many healthcare professionals expressed their interest in implementing the scheme and discussed the importance and challenges of ensuring quality in breast cancer care.
At the end, our group was honoured to receive acknowledgement from Commissioner Stella Kyriakides for their work underlining the value of the activities to help combatting cancer.
