The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (DG JRC) wants to understand how scientists and governments can ensure that their communication resonates more deeply with citizens without resorting to the manipulative tactics used by those who seek to undermine liberal democracy. How can scientific and government actors ensure their communications are equally meaningful and ethical?
This project is part of the JRC’s Enlightenment 2.0 multi-annual research programme. To date, the Enlightenment 2.0 expert community comprises more than 100 experts from a broad range of disciplines around the world, for more details please refer to the Enlightenment 2.0 Research Programme page.
Call for experts
To communicate and inform citizens in ways that are consistent with upholding EU values, the communication environment needs to be designed explicitly and accountably in support of those values. If communication policies are to be conducive to building trust and mutual respect, solidarity, citizenship, equality and fairness they will have to be designed explicitly to achieve these values.
To underpin this work, state-of-the-art literature reviews are needed and have to be both broad and deep, covering the source, sender, message, channel and receiver as well as optimal feedback loops throughout the classical communication process.
Kick-off meeting
Selected experts will be invited to an in-person (COVID-19 measures permitting) 2-day workshop in January 2022 in Brussels, Belgium to scope and map out the subjects to be addressed in the literature reviews.
Financial support for travel and accommodation will be available.
