Aflatoxins are toxins produced by certain funghi (Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus). They are produced by inappropriate storage of food and are generally an issue related to foods from warmer regions of the world. Foods that may be affected by aflatoxins include cereals, spices, peanuts, pistachios, Brazil nuts, chillies, black pepper, dried fruit and figs. Consumption of foods contaminated with aflatoxin is a risk factor for primary liver cancer.
