Brief me
This activity enhances traditional risk assessment with holistic foresight and systems thinking. It aims to help policymakers navigate increasingly extreme, interconnected, and potentially global disaster risks. Many risks have the potential to develop into global shocks, and the cascading impacts of disasters can be severe.
The ‘Risks on the Horizon’ study identified 40 risks, including three 'existential' threats to humanity. It provides a starting point for EU policymakers to discuss future polycrises in collective intelligence exercises and examine risk drivers. This can help policymakers identify interventions to prevent or mitigate impacts, capitalize on opportunities, and support policy goals.
The Competence Centre on Foresight activities support risk management and coordinated policy approaches to enhance preparedness for future risks and crises. It thus contributes to enhancing societal resilience and preparedness facing potential future crises.
