I work on the Research England funded research and knowledge exchange project, Capabilities in Academic Policy Engagement (CAPE). This was the first strategic investment in the UK exploring what works (and what doesn't) to support research-policy engagement across universities and policy-making organisations. We do this as a consortium of five universities and policy partners. I am based at UCL, and I work with the Universities of Cambridge, Manchester, Nottingham & Northumbria. Our partners include the Transforming Evidence Hub, Government Office for Science, Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology and Nesta.
We are focused on delivering four 'mechanisms' of academic policy engagement: policy fellowships (for both academia to spend time in policy organisations, and for policy people to spend time in universities), seed funding (for collaboration, or focusing on challenges), knowledge exchange events (which move beyond dissemination) and training.
I have delivered activities with national policy organisations like the Government's Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities, the Department for Environment & Rural Affairs and the Ministry of Justice, as well as at a UK regional (West Yorkshire, the Greater London Authority) and at a local authority level (e.g. Newham and Islington Councils). I have particular expertise and experience in delivering policy fellowships and knowledge exchange (e.g. networks, communities of practice, etc).
I am also a Vice-Chair of the Universities Policy Engagement Network.
