National Institute of Health Dr. Ricardo Jorge

João Brandão is an applied Chemist-Biotechnologist with a PhD in Biology and Ecology of Climate Change, specialised in Medical and Environmental Microbiology. Conducts research and services to the community in these two areas of expertise since 2001. Currently positioned at the Department of Environmental Health, at the Portuguese National Institute of Health Doutor Ricardo Jorge, leading sand contaminants research, microfungi in drinking water and the Quality Assessment Programme on sand quality. Head of the mycology laboratory; Integrated researcher at the Center for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM) and the Centre for Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Changes (cE3c); National expert of the European Microbiology Experts Group (EMEG - an advisory group of the European Commission on Bathing Water and Drinking Water Directives); member of the Guidelines development group of the World Health Organisation (WHO) for recreational water quality. Previously positioned at Lusófona University (Assistant Professor); at the National Institute of Health, Department of Epidemiology and later at the Department of Transmittable Diseases. Subjects of interest are environmental microbiology of sand and water, with direct and indirect influence in human health; Microbial flow between soil and water; microfungi in drinking water; Climatic adaptation and human resilience, fungal antimicrobial resistance and emerging fungal pathogens
