Europe Media Monitor (EMM) analyses multilingual news for public discourse and European Union policy development.
The medical domain is one of several domains covered by the Europe Media Monitor (EMM) research project and includes approximately 120,000 publicly available pages in 80 languages across 150 countries every day. With this domain, we aim to retrieve insights from the news media coverage of medical events. These insights appear as alerts on emerging diseases, worldwide disease-group distribution, top stories related to medical events across the selected news media, among others.
Our work is a key driver of the Epidemic Intelligence from Open Sources Initiative (EIOS) system. This fit-for-purpose web-based platform augments and accelerates national, regional, and global Public Health Intelligence (PHI) activities. The EIOS system was built through a long-standing collaboration between the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission, and has been augmented by an increasing number of partners, including the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). EIOS is an evolving system designed to meet the dynamic challenges of global health security by supporting PHI experts worldwide.
