New study highlights key challenges for biodiversity monitoring in Europe

The European Alien Species Information Network (EASIN) team of the EC's Knowledge Centre for Biodiversity (KCBD), has contributed to a new study exploring the challenges and opportunities for implementing Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs) across Europe.

EBVs are a set of standardised biological measurements that help track biodiversity change over time and provide the scientific evidence needed to assess progress towards biodiversity policy goals, including the Kunming - Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030.

The study highlights the need for sustained investment, harmonised monitoring protocols, improved data integration, and greater accessibility of biodiversity data. Addressing these challenges will strengthen Europe's capacity to monitor biodiversity change and support evidence-based environmental policymaking.
