Advancing gender equality in agriculture and rural areas – Policy brief

This document presents the findings and recommendations of five Horizon Europe projects that have been working on advancing gender equality:

  • FLIARA: female-led innovation in agriculture and rural areas
  • GRASS CEILING: gender equality in rural and agricultural innovation systems
  • SWIFT: supporting women-led innovations in farming and rural territories
  • CODECS: maximising the co-benefits of agricultural digitalisation through conducive digital ecosystems)
  • Quantifram: promoting digital agricultural approaches that are holistic, inclusive and human centered.

Drawing on the collective insights and recommendations from these projects, the following policy recommendations are proposed:

  • Mainstream gender equality and targeted support by implementing a dual approach to gender equality,  strengthening data collection and representation and recognizing and reward community- building work
  • Foster innovation and leadership by promoting multifunctional and locally-led innovation, enhancing women’s role in knowledge and innovation systems and promoting role models tackling gender stereotypes.
  • Reform policy and funding mechanisms by conducting gender analysis and human rights impact assessments,  expanding the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) social conditionality and supporting small and medium agroecological farms.
  • Leverage digitalization and technologies for gender equality by prioritising women in technology development,  integrating digital skills in gender equality programs and tailoring training and promote female entrepreneurship in agritech.
  • Make agriculture and rural areas attractive for young women and gender-diverse people.
