Kenya's agriculture sector has experienced tremendous transformation for the past ten years. Despite this, poverty and food insecurity persist owing to erratic climate change, recurrent shocks, and developing rural infrastructure and market connectivity that continue to have a negative impact on agricultural production, livelihoods, and economic growth. Recently, there has been great awareness and demand for safe and healthy food. The National Food Safety Policy, 2013, requires that producers follow the required production standards as outlined in the Kenya Standards (KS)- 1758:2 to ensure safe food production. This calls for adoption of creative, innovative, entrepreneurial, and sustainable agricultural systems that provide safe, healthy, and sufficient food for all without compromising the environment. Agriculture is a devolved function of the County government (constitution of Kenya 2010). Murang'a county government has identified agroecology as one of the solutions to enhance its agricultural productivity, create employment for the youth, women and the vulnerable, enhance food and nutrition security and environmental protection. Agroecology will help in restoring soil health, prudent natural resource management, use of local biodegradable materials and evading use of hazardous substances.
