Digital technologies for sustainable agriculture and food systems

This chapter serves as the introduction to the volume Digital Technologies for Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems. It presents the overall objectives, structure, and rationale behind the book. The chapter begins by outlining the pressing global challenges facing food and agricultural systems—ranging from climate change and food insecurity to supply chain disruptions—and underscores the urgency of transformation toward sustainability and resilience. It explains why digital technologies are increasingly seen as key enablers in this transformation, offering tools to improve productivity, efficiency, transparency, and environmental outcomes. The chapter then details the organization of the book, which is divided into 15 chapters: an introductory chapter, 13 thematic chapters covering key digital tools and case-based applications, and a concluding chapter exploring future trends. It also clarifies the book's multidisciplinary scope, integrating perspectives from policy, planning, technological innovation, and socioeconomic development. Finally the chapter identifies the target audience: academics and researchers in sustainability and food systems; policymakers working on agricultural innovation and digital governance; practitioners in agri-tech and rural development; and graduate students in related fields. By providing this roadmap, This chapter ensures that readers from diverse backgrounds can navigate the volume and engage with its content in a structured and meaningful way.
