Approximately 15.5 million people in Bangladesh (16 percent of the analysed population) experienced high levels of acute food insecurity in April 2025 and were classified in IPC Phase 3 or above (Crisis or worse). The IPC acute food insecurity analysis for Bangladesh covered 39 units. Of these, 16 districts were classified in IPC Phase 3 (Crisis), driven by climatic shock such as cyclones and inflation pushing food prices up. Compared to the previous analysis in October 2024, which classified 23.6 million people (26 percent of the population) in IPC Phase 3 or above, the April 2025 analysis shows a substantial improvement in the food security situation. The proportion of the population facing IPC Phase 3 or above has declined to 16 percent from 26 percent in the current period and to 17 percent in the projected period.
The remaining 23 units are classified in Stressed (IPC Phase 2). The highest incidence of acute food insecurity was observed in Cox’s Bazar, especially communities hosting refugees and Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMN), with 30 percent of the population classified in Phase 3. This is followed by Barguna, Bandarban, Noakhali, FDMN at Bhashanchar, Satkhira and Sunamganj where around 25 percent of people are classified in Phase 3. These populations require urgent interventions to safeguard their livelihoods and mitigate food deficits.
In the projection period (May-December 2025), the number of people in IPC Phase 3 or above (Crisis or worse) is expected to slightly increase to 16 million, representing 17 percent of the total analysed population. This includes 400,000 people classified in Emergency (IPC Phase 4). The food security situation is expected to worsen notably for Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMN) in Cox’s Bazar and Bhashanchar, with 20 percent classified in Phase 4 and 20 percent in Phase 3 respectively. Sunamganj and Host community and Non-Host Local Community in Cox’s Bazar are also expected to face high food insecurity, with 30 percent and 35 percent of their respective populations classified in Phase 3 or above with 5 percent population classified in IPC Phase 4 (Emergency) for Sunamganj.
