Sludge drying reed beds (RBs) enable sewage sludge dewatering, stabilization, mineralization and hygenization. They are an alternative to mechanical treatment (e.g. belt presses, centrifuges) and enable long-term storage. In the process, sludge is spread on a filter media (substrate) of an open bed after which drainage and evaporation takes place. Planted RBs enable effective dewatering of sewage sludge and produce a mineralized product that can be used as a soil amendment in agriculture and other uses.
