Overview
The Atlas of Demography is an interactive online platform that shares research and data on the effects of population changes on EU policies.
It is developed by JRC as one of the actions foreseen by the Communication on the Demography Toolbox and under the mandate on demography for the new Commission assigned to Commissioner Suica.
The Demography Toolbox urges Member States to develop integrated policies addressing demographic shifts and to incorporate demographic considerations into all policy areas.
The Atlas supports this effort by facilitating evidence-based science-policy dialogues within the European Commission and with Member States.
The Atlas' stories aim to make demographic data relatable by presenting it in the context of issues relevant to EU citizens. They illustrate how the long-term processes of ageing and depopulation in EU countries and territories necessitate significant adaptations in our socioeconomic systems, including healthcare, long-term care, pensions, family support, labour markets, and the provision of essential territorial services in regions experiencing demographic and economic decline.
Each story provides a clear narrative of key insights from in-depth analyses produced by JRC in collaboration with external scientists and leading demographic institutions. Interactive graphs enable users to explore data for specific periods, countries, and territories.
The Atlas is currently undergoing a major revamp, with most sections still in progress. New stories will be added in 2025, providing background information for European Commission policy initiatives related to demography.
