Online resources on "Sustainable Food Systems"

This section provides a selection of online resources related to the transition toward "Sustainable Food Systems”: examples of successful transitions, data related to food systems, evaluation tools, etc.

Data/Monitoring

Food Systems Dashboard

The Food Systems Dashboard gives a complete view of food systems by bringing together data from multiple sources. It's possible to compare drivers, components, and outcomes of food systems across countries and regions, gain insights into challenges, and identify actions to improve nutrition, health, and environmental outcomes.

EU Food System Monitoring Dashboard

The EU Food System Dashboard is a tool developed by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) to monitor the sustainability of the EU food system. It will help measuring the progresses towards an EU sustainable food system, covering the three dimensions of sustainability (environment, economic and social) as well as horizontal aspects of governance and resilience

EDGAR-FOOD

EDGAR-FOOD is global emission inventory of Green House Gases (GHGs) and air pollutants from the food systems, developed and maintained by the JRC.  It has been developed to aid the understanding of the activities underlying the energy demand and use, agriculture and land use change emissions associated with the production, distribution, consumption and disposal of food through the various stages and sectors of the composite global food system.

Our World in Data

Our World in Data provides datasets on food insecurity and malnutrition, land use, farm size, agricultural production, crop yields, use of fertilisers and pesticides, and as well on the environmental impacts of food production.

FAO database

FAOSTAT provides free access to food and agriculture data for over 245 countries and territories and covers all FAO regional groupings from 1961 to the most recent year available.

FAO Food Loss APP

The FAO Food Loss App (FLAPP) is a tool designed to help farmers, companies, producer associations, and cooperatives make informed decisions to reduce crop losses. Through video advisories and data visualization, FLAPP provides analyses of losses and their causes—from pests and diseases to poor packaging and more—across every stage from harvest to the wholesale market.

APHLIS - African postharvest Losses Information System

APHLIS collects, analyses and disseminates data on postharvest losses of cereal grains in sub-Saharan Africa.

Planet-Based Diets

This WWF platform focuses on diets and includes:

  • An assessment of dietary shifts in 147 countries;
  • A simulation tool;
  • A description of the different forms a “planet-based diet” can take;
  • Priority actions and policy recommendations

The Great Food Puzzle

The Great Food Puzzle series by WWF focuses on the imperative role of place-based approaches for winning the high-stakes race to transform food systems and nourish all people within planetary boundaries. The series focuses on simplifying the complexities of the global food system by using the best available science to identify place-based solutions with the highest potential for impact. In these reports, place-based solutions refer to either country or landscape-level solutions that are dependent on local context.
