Tools and applications on "Agroecology"

Tools and applications to support decision making on “Agroecology”.

Farming practices evidence library

This library synthesizes a large amount of scientific evidence to assess the effects of farming practices on sustainability outcomes, mainly regarding the environment, the climate, and agricultural productivity.

The Transformative Partnership Platform on Agroecology (TPP Agroecology)

The Transformative Partnership Platform (TPP Agroecology) offers a database on tools, guides and mobiles apps. Further, the website contains links to videos and websites. The Agroecology TPP communities is a space to enable and assist community members to connect, share, learn on agroecology.

Handbook for the Evaluation of Agroecology - A method to evaluate its effects and the conditions for its development

The Groupe de travail sur les Transitions Agroecologiques (GTAE’s) has developed a methodological tool for the evaluation of agroecology making it possible to:

  • on the one hand, evaluate the agronomic, socio-economic and environmental effects of these practices and systems
  • on the other hand, evaluate the conditions for development of agroecological practices and systems, i.e. favourable factors and obstacles for their development.

The Agroecology Finance Assement Framework

The agroecology finance assessment tool is an online tool to evaluate projects/initiatives/calls for proposal for their support to agroecological transformations

Boost-AE: Collaborative Platform for Agroecological Transition

Boost-AE is an interactive and collaborative web platform designed to enable actors in the agroecological transition in tropical areas to find all types of partners, public and/or private, that they are looking for. Understanding "who does what" in a region of action is an important asset to better quickly the networks of relevant partners for any new cooperation or development project.

Tool for agroecology performance evaluation (TAPE)

This FAO knowledge product consists of tools to support evidence-based decision-making: a global analytical framework and a supporting database to assess the multi-dimensional performance of agroecology.

While the analytical framework provides the theory, background, and proposed approach to measure performance and assess agroecology in terms of metrics and methods, the global database will be the repository of data populated from the application of the framework in case studies in a diversity of production systems and regions.

The analytical framework aims at providing a diagnostic of agricultural performance across many dimensions to move beyond standard measures of productivity (e.g. yield/ha) and better represent the benefits and tradeoffs of different agricultural systems.

Guide for the evaluation of agroecology

The  Guide for the evaluation of agroecology is a methodological tool for assessing the effects of agroecological practices and systems on the agro-environmental and socio-economic performance of agriculture, and for assessing the conditions necessary for the development of agroecology. It aims to help development stakeholders better design their projects, programmes and public policies in support of agroecology; facilitate the creation of references (performance and conditions necessary for development); and assist farmers so that they can better evaluate the results of their practices and thus have guidance for making decisions.

Agroecology Criteria Tool (ACT)

The Agroecology Criteria Tool (ACT) methodology by Biovision (V 1.0.0, 2020) is based on the analytical framework by Gliessman (2916) on the 5 levels of food system change and is embedded within the 10 Elements of Agroecology by FAO (2018). Each element of the transition includes a list of relevant topics (inclusion criteria). Farming systems should clearly identify and key ecological functions and aim to integrate these various elements carefully into the farming systems creating multiple levels of positive interactions and not just substituting external inputs and engaging in isolated, singular interventions.

Operational guide on agroecology

A comprehensive methodological and policy guide that covers definitions, principles, practical steps for integrating agroecology into programming and evaluation, with examples of interventions and evaluation tools (including TAPE and ACT). Useful for planners, policymakers and international cooperation projects.

Agroecology Info Pool

This website is an initiative of Biovision. It proposes, an “agroecology criteria tool” to assess the transformation potential of projects and policies, a selection of showcases, and various analyses on the contribution of agroecology to the achievement of the SDGs, on agroecological research, on the link between agroecology and climate change, and on the economic viability of agroecology. It includes also a forum on food system.
