Economics of Industrial Research and Innovation

Analysing the contribution of private R&D and our technological capabilities to EU competitiveness.

What we do

Economics of Industrial Research & Innovation (IRI) is a science-to-policy project carried out at the JRC Seville (Directorate B - Fair & Sustainable Economy), one of the seven scientific institutes of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC).

The project aims at providing EU policy-makers, the scientific community, and other institutional and economic actors with empirical evidence and robust analysis on the contribution of private-sector R&D and our technological capabilities to EU competitiveness.

Feeding into key policy initiatives outlined in the Competitiveness Compass, our work aims to contribute to closing the innovation gap through targeted funding, decarbonising industry to foster a sustainability‑driven growth model, and reducing strategic dependencies that expose the Union to external shocks.

This should lead to the elaboration of medium and long-term evidence-based policy options to support the development and implementation of EU policies.
