Session description
Global climate patterns are changing, triggering slow changes in ecosystems and agricultural productivity, as well as the sudden onset of disasters, including hurricanes, heat waves and droughts.
Climate change will have a profound impact on population dynamics and human mobility. According to the latest predictions, hundreds of millions of people will be displaced in the coming years because of climate change. Not surprisingly, this raises questions about where these people will go, and what the impact will be on our societies.
Scientists and scientific organisations around the world have attempted to quantify future climate migration and predict future flows of climate refugees. None of these attempts have led to accurate predictions.
While science is increasingly confident about global warming, its implications for population change are unclear and still unpredictable.
Research conducted on this topic paints an increasingly complex picture of drivers and consequences, highlighting the role of multiple contributing factors.
In this session organised by the KCMD, panellists will discuss the latest scientific evidence on the connection between climate change and population dynamics.

In his presentation 'From responsibility for emission to exposure, vulnerability and migration', Fabrizio Natale, JRC lead scientist on climate induced migration, will provide insights into the challenges and complexities in establishing a causal link between climate change and migration.
