Total organic carbon

quantity of organic carbon present in a product.

- Note 1 to entry: Total organic carbon is often determined as the carbon that is converted into carbon dioxide by combustion and which is not liberated as carbon dioxide by acid treatment.

- Note: A unit (grams of carbon) can be mentioned. Considering the general definition of “product”, counting the inorganic fraction in TOC is not always appropriate
