Assessing the Impact of Livestock Extension Services on Food Security: Evidence From Livestock Farming Households in Bangladesh

Livestock extension services (LESs) play a crucial role in promoting the acceptance of improved livestock technologies, enhancing livestock production, and strengthening household food and nutritional security. This study examines the association between LESs and household food and nutritional security in livestock farming households in the southern Delta region of Bangladesh, utilizing data from the Bangladesh Integrated Household Survey 2018 (BIHS-2018). To address potential endogeneity, we applied endogenous switching regression (ESR) and propensity score matching (PSM) methods. The results indicate that LESs have a statistically significant positive effect on food and nutritional security, with households receiving extension services exhibiting higher dietary diversity and calorie intake compared to nonrecipients. These findings underscore the importance of LESs in facilitating the adoption of improved livestock management practices. This underscores the importance of extension services in the livestock sector to ensure food and nutritional security. The findings suggest that policymakers should enhance farmer outreach, improve advisory support, and facilitate technology adoption (TA) to support sustainable food and nutritional security among livestock farming households.
