GAIN: Harnessing AI to Transform the Fight Against Malnutrition

GAIN’s new strategy sets out how artificial intelligence (AI) can be used responsibly to strengthen the design, delivery, and scale of nutrition programmes, helping address persistent challenges in data use, programme implementation, and food fortification, while prioritizing equity and impact in low-resource settings.

The strategy outlines practical ways AI can enhance nutrition programmes, from improving data integration to identifying micronutrient deficiency hotspots, streamlining quality assurance for fortified foods, and delivering personalised advice through chatbots and other digital tools. It highlights opportunities to use predictive analytics for markets and supply chains, monitor food safety, and understand consumer trends in real time. The approach is guided by a framework for responsible AI use, drawing on UNESCO and WHO guidance, ensuring transparency, human oversight, and solutions that work in low-resource settings. By combining innovation, reinvention, and optimization, GAIN aims to use AI to strengthen programme effectiveness, operational efficiency, and equitable impact for the populations most in need.
