Monitoring the uptake of AI applications across sectors

Artificial Intelligence has become a strategic driver of innovation, competitiveness and transformation across economies and societies. Recent advances in computing power, data availability and algorithmic performance have accelerated the deployment of AI-enabled solutions in fields ranging from manufacturing and healthcare to education, public services and creative industries.
Tracking how, where and how fast AI applications are being adopted is essential for the European Commission and Member States to:

  • understand the state of digital transformation in Europe;

  • inform policy-making in a timely manner;

  • identify gaps, barriers and opportunities for support;

  • benchmark Europe’s progress, monitor impact and adjust priorities accordingly.

Our approach

Our work builds on the proven methodologies of the Joint Research Centre’s “AI Watch” initiative and related frameworks. Key elements include:

  • Mapping the AI landscape: monitoring industrial and research ecosystems, investments, R&D, actors, and their networks

  • Sector-specific monitoring: assessing uptake of AI applications in different domains, for instance, education and digital skills

Sectoral uptake

We monitor how AI is being adopted in key sectors of the economy and society, for example:

  • Education & digital skills: ensuring that the learning ecosystem evolves to equip learners, teachers and institutions with the knowledge, competence and literacy to use AI and adapt to a changed environment

  • Research & innovation: mapping how research organisations, startups and firms are developing AI capabilities, commercialising them, scaling up and joining ecosystems
