Climate change and climate extremes are one of the most serious challenges facing the world today.
Climate variability and exposure to more complex, frequent and intense climate extremes are threatening to erode and even to reverse the gains made in ending hunger and malnutrition. Both the Global report against Food Crises and the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World, released in 2021, confirmed that climate variability and extremes are one of the main drivers of food crises together with conflicts and economic downturns.
Taking action to deal with it is a top priority for the European Union. The EU is committed to global efforts to fight climate change and strengthen societies’ ability to cope with its negative impacts including climate extremes. This commitment is reflected in ambitious targets and policies at both EU and Member State level.
