Bioeconomy & Climate Change & Energy Policies

A sustainable and circular EU bioeconomy is crucial to addressing climate objectives.

The EU has set ambitious measures and goals to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. It has done so by defining emission targets for key sectors of the economy.

Current objectives for 2030:

  • 40% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions compared to 1990 levels;
  • at least 32% share of renewable energy;
  • at least 32.5% improvement in energy efficiency.

Climate Change policy is the headline ambition under the Green Deal.

In September 2020, the Commission proposed to raise the 2030 greenhouse gas emission reduction target to at least 55%, compared to 1990 levels, with the goal of reaching climate neutrality by 2050.

In July 2021, the European Commission presented the Fit for 55 package, which consists of a set of inter-connected proposals setting out how the EU can achieve these targets in a fair, cost effective and competitive way. The package strengthens existing pieces of legislation and presents new initiatives, with specific targets across a range policy areas and economic sectors: climate, energy and fuels, transport, buildings, land use and forestry.

A sustainable and circular EU bioeconomy is central to most of these initiatives and thus to achieving a climate-neutral future.
