The Tipping Point, created by the artist Yiannis Kranidiotis and Frank Dentener, a senior expert at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, has been published on Cell Press.
Anthropogenic climate change is driving the Earth’s climate system toward critical thresholds—tipping points—including the Amazon rainforest, Atlantic circulation, boreal forests, coral reefs, Greenland ice sheet, permafrost, West Antarctic ice sheet, and parts of East Antarctica. Crossing these tipping points can trigger irreversible catastrophes with unprecedented socio-environmental impacts. Alarmingly, the tipping point for coral reefs has already been surpassed.
The artwork, a data-driven kinetic installation, features 24 custom light metronomes whose motions are powered by environmental data from 1950 to the present, linked to five major climate tipping points.
