Niger Economic Update, April 2025: Special Chapter - Strengthening the Agri-Food System

  • Publication | 2025

The agriculture sector is highly vulnerable to climate change. Increasing frequency of droughts, floods, and heatwaves impact crops and livestock yields, exacerbating existing vulnerabilities and threating food security and livelihoods. Over the past two decades, Niger faced at least nine major droughts and five major floods, affecting its rural population and rainfed agriculture. Climate change contributes to the Niger’s food crisis, occurring every four years on average. Future projections indicate significant natural annual variability in precipitation, with an anticipated increase of nearly 25 percent in rainfall during the rainy season by the 2050s. Heavy precipitation events are also likely to occur at least twice as many times resulting in significant flood risk.
