When AI meets science: opportunities, risks and ethics for research communities

JRC presenting at AI Week event in Brussels.

  • Event | 18 Mar 2026

As part of AI Week 2026, hosted by the Belgian Federal Public Service Policy & Support (SPF/FOD BOSA), this event will be dedicated to AI in Science. The two-hour session, organised by the Belgian Science Policy Office (BELSPO) will address some key questions about the potential of AI for science, both for researchers and research organisations: how can AI transform the conduct as well as the communication of research? How to deal with ethics when it comes to using AI in scientific research? Which opportunities does the EU offer to foster AI uptake in research? How to combine open science, generative AI and research security in the conduct of scientific research?

As part of the event, a researcher from the Commission’s Joint Research Centre, Victoria Ruiz-Serra, will present findings from the 2025 report The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Scientific Research.

The event is open to researchers, research organisations, policymakers, AI experts and enthusiasts, and to all who are curious about the potential of AI for Science.

It is taking place on Wednesday 18 March 2026, 14:00-16:00 at the Royal Library of Belgium in Brussels.
