Expanding our understanding of climate change and migration

Scientific research on climate-related migration needs to move beyond asking whether climate change drives migration. A new publication in Nature Climate Change calls for broadening the research agenda on migration by addressing the role of climate impacts, ways to adept to climate change and the connection with efforts to reduce the effects of climate change.

 
The perspective article identifies four areas in which further research is required:


1. The effectiveness of migration as a strategy to adept
2. The interaction between migration and efforts for adaptation in place
3. The consequences of migration for origin and destination communities
4. The effect of efforts to reduce climate impacts on migration


In order to fill these gaps in existing research, the paper advocates for strengthening conceptual frameworks, improving data availability and innovating methods.
