New office space: harnessing place identity at work

This article is part of the series “Science Behind the Way we Work” aimed at providing public servants with practical, evidence-based advice to help improve the way we work. By combining insights gleaned from cognitive, behavioural and organisational science, we offer readers actionable tips that they can immediately implement in their jobs.

This article explores the impact of office design on employee performance and well-being, particularly in the context of transitioning to new open-plan office spaces. Through scientific research, the article emphasises the importance of harnessing ambient belonging and place identity at the workplace. Indeed, studies have shown that customising and decorating office spaces according to personal preference and identity can enhance productivity and well-being. Leaders can also play a crucial role to facilitate this process of adaptation. The article provides actionable tips for employees as well as managers. Overall, this article highlights the importance of considering the impact of office design on employee well-being as organisations adapt to changing work environments.
