Alliance for agroecology in West Africa takes shape

The Alliance for Agroecology in West Africa (3AO) took major steps forward over recent weeks, as its members refined its work program and prepared to launch the platform at a series of high-level events.

3AO supports the development of agroecology and sustainable food systems in West Africa. Its goals and activities are described in a brochure (also available in French) co-developed by the members. The platform will be profiled at a side event on Transitions to Agroecology at the FAO Committee on World Food Security (CFS) on October 15.

On November 3-5, the platform will be represented at the African Food Systems and the SDGs conference, hosted by AFSA (Saly, Senegal).

Born from the April 2018 multi-stakeholder meeting organised by IPES-Food and ROPPA in Dakar, the Alliance includes farmers' organizations, research institutes / universities, international NGOs and social movements. The alliance's activities are structured around an evolving action plan (available on request) which comprises over fifty initiatives, divided into five priority areas in which members participate actively: 1) food system governance & agricultural financing; 2) participatory research & knowledge consolidation; 3) civil society network & mobilization; 4) farmer-to-farmer training systems; and 5) local food systems & market access.
