About
Upon request from the European Parliament, JRC Unit I.1 has been running the Pilot Project ‘A multidimensional inequality monitoring framework for the EU’ since 2019.
The Pilot Project develops a conceptual framework for monitoring multidimensional inequalities in the EU. It provides a novel and comprehensive dashboard of over 300 national level inequality metrics, 90 per cent of which have been calculated for the first time on a systematic and comparable fashion across EU countries. The dashboard spans 10 key life domains (such as knowledge, health, material wellbeing, culture or environmental conditions) and five different methodological approaches (from unacceptable disparities in life outcomes to inequality of opportunities and obstacles to social mobility). Additionally, the accompanying online visualisation platform develops and applies a multicriteria double-sorting algorithm that allows users to compare inequality performance across countries without having to rely on composite indicator scores.
Now that the project is coming to an end, the project team would like to invite us to the official launch of the new JRC science for policy report ‘Monitoring multidimensional inequalities in the European Union’, together with the supportive online platform.
The launch event will consist of a webinar on Friday 28 May, from 10:00 to 11:00, via WebEx. We are pleased to announce that MEP Ms Özlem Demirel, rapporteur of the own-initiative report on ‘Reducing inequalities with a special focus on in-work poverty’, will join the event to give a short speech on ‘Reducing inequalities in the EU: what can be done?’. Following Ms Demirel’s presentation, the project team will walk us briefly through the project’s findings and the online visualisation tool. The event will close with a Q&A session.
Update to the programme: We are pleased to announce that Ms Anne Karjalainen, Chair of the Committee of the Regions Commission for Social Policy, will also join us to share her views on how to reduce inequalities in the EU from a regional and local perspective.
